I think his reasoning for putting a bari sax in the midst of the tubas was not for tonal reasons rather to give you tuba players some rhythmic accuracy and facility on the faster passages! Everyone knows that a bari sax is much more fleet of foot than the lumbering leviathan that is the tuba! Come on get the with the game!! You play low and loud!

Besides no bari player in his right mind would try to mellow out a tuba section! There is nothing more mellow than a drunken tuba player anyways!!!!

On a serious note, any conductor who would try to have a bari sax play the same parts as a tuba obviously doesn't understand tessaturra (little help on the spelling, please...) or actual pitch! The amont of overtones present in the sound of the bari would make things sound wrong!!
