Most non-professional bari sax players have the honky uncentered sound concept. I feel that this comes from too many instances where the bari sax player is enticed with the ease of sound gained by the weak reed and bad choice of mouthpiece. It is also partialy correct that the influences in modern bari sax playing are limited to some great but obscure performers touring with sax quartets and some of the remaining big bands.

Getting the player to change the concept of his sound to a less gravelly sound would be a help, but I don't know if you can actually talk to him. That's up to you.
