I'm not sufficiently expert to answer your question for you; I can only answer it for myself. When I played a Conn Helleberg on my Musica F tuba (actually, a very similar Parantucci Model 1), the instrument sounded dead and tubby. With the PT-9 (now the PT-64), the instrument came alive.

But when I bought the little Yamaha, the PT-9 was a disaster on that instrument--it bottled up that lovely low register. The Conn Helleberg is a bit big for it, though, and the intonation is a bit funky. I'm using a Doug Elliott R4 combination which is not that different from the Helleberg, and it works well. That instrument seems fine with a deep funnel-type mouthpiece, a healty diameter, and a medium-small backbore, at least for the sort of sound I want out of it.
