I grew up, and still live in Delaware. In the early/middle 50's the school had 2 BBb and one Eb (that played). Most of them were old. A small King, a big Martin, and a Conn Eb. There was another one that was junk - don't remember what it was. In order to play one of them we put the neck and bits together with duct tape or masking tape painted silver. My sophmore year, after making 1st chair State Band, the band boosters found enough money to buy a new Conn Eb.

Things got better later when more money was available for schools. I'm showing my age, but I rememnber (about 1954 or so) when new teachers made just about $3000 a year. By the middle 60's it was more like $5000 year. But on the other hand my Dad's 1949 model automobile only cost about $700 brnd new. And a brand new Ford Mustang started at $1964 in it's first year, 1964. Now if all that didn't confuse anyone under 50, I'll be surprised!
