"middle ground" is just the right idea. In the long run, there is no substitute for simply "knowing" the clef. Play enough, and you will learn it.
Before someone objects that they've been playing it that way for 10 years and it's still the only way for them, let me point out that your fingers can "know" it even when you can't verbalize it.
So...use whatever tricks you need - and then just play. All the usual stuff. exercises, scales, etudes, solos...just play.
