There has been criticism in the past of Walter "softening" his Mahler interpretations since he worked with Mahler and much of his working contact with Mahler was mostly with the early symphonies. Of all the conductor's who worked with Mahler, Mengelberg probably had the most working contact with Mahler who was a frequent guest in Amsterdam.

I think by 1947, 78's were at their technical zenith & while the longer movements were still subject to time limitations, movements like the Adagietto fell well in the range of the discs. Also, from what I've read, by this time, Columbia was recording 16" discs in anticipation of the LP which would come out the following year.
