I would recommend taking an instrument repair course, or apprentice with a good repair tech. If you cannot devote the time to a full-fledged apprenticeship, you could study part-time with a repairman. This is how I got started while in the Army - I studied with a former Schilke employee, and also with a former Julius Keilwerth(woodwind manufacturer) employee. By the way, I highly recommend studying woodwind repair also, as it will make you a better brass technician.
