You might be able to construct your own research project here. Whenever our church's brass ensemble has a difficult rhythmic phrase, it seems to help to have everyone talk or sing through the rhythm.
You could quantify the time required for your students to learn a rhythm by singing (talking) vs. a control (e.g., learning by rote) or some other method.
Just a thought....maybe not a very good one, but a thought.
