Try the 2 and 3 combination (sometimes called a false fingering) for the note 1/2 step above the fundemental (eg. B on a B flat tuba) on a four valve tuba. You have to get used to this, it takes a good amount of practice to center an in tune note. I do not know the physics behind this (I work in analytical chemistry), perhaps one of our engineer/tubists can explain.
