This was Bernstein's 1st appearance in many years with the orchestra. There have been comments by others in the Rec.Music.Classical.recordings newsgroup who attended the concerts that it was an amazing experience. The last movement must have been bone crushing in Orchestra Hall. IIRC, the brass played Bernstein a tusch after the concerts.

For me it's been hard to beat this recording. The Masur/NY Phil disc is good, but it isn't the flattening experience that the Bernstein is. Bernstein also did a Shostakovich 7 when he was music director of the Philharmonic. I think the tuba was Mr. Novotny on that one.
