It's not just the Germans doing this either. In the Ricordi version of Pines of Rome, the score lists 4 trombone parts, even though the 4th trombone part is listed as "tuba bassa". I believe the musicologists are on the right track to NOT take as gospel what publishers write on the parts they produce. The motives of music publishers are not necessarily the same as the composer's. The composer will prefer that the music is accurately reflective of his intentions. The publisher wants to sell as many copies of the music as possible. That's why I always try to find critical editions of works we play, regardless of the version of the part I have to read in performance. Most of the works we play are edited in this way by myself and the orchestra librarian anyhow.
