I use a real old Vega mouthpiece that is super deep and V shaped with a gradual entrance to the throat and it makes a lot of bass but is very inefficient. The shape is similar to a more bowl shaped horn mouthpiece like the Schilke 31B. French horn uses a dark sounding mouthpiece because most of the brilliance comes from the instrument having such a long narrow bore. I've found that a cup shape that sounds good on flugel horn sounds good on tuba and vice versa. Theres a lot of variation in flugel mouthpieces, much more so than for tuba, all the way from U shaped to convex. A horn mouthpiece sounds horrible on flugel, its way too mellow. I would be interested to know how a convex Jet-Tone style cup sounds on tuba.
