The violin is much more like the human voice, whereas the tuba is much more like a percussion instrument.
The beginnings of violins' sounds are subtile, whereas the beginnings of tubas' sounds are sudden.
This might explain some of the descrepancy...but I'm kinda doubting if this is a viable explanation of what was happening with violin-playing Mary Ann and her tuba-playing friend.
