I recently noticed this myself, I practice my concert tuba at home during marching season, then bring it in when we start concert.. Boy was i suprised! I just got used to the fact my sound was pathetic when playing at home. Now when I play in the band hall, Its just amazing. My tone is so much better and everything sounds so much nicer.
Tubas are not meant for small rooms, the small room dampens the sound and really makes sound terrible.
