I just think that maybe what you sound like in a smaller room or a room that has poor acoustic qualities is the sound that you really create. I spend most of my time practicing in rooms that do this for me, and I feel that's how it should be done. It cuts a lot of factors out of the sound you're actually hearing, so I can hear what I'm doing wrong (if you're doing something wrong it's harder to tell in an ampitheater where almost anyone can sound good). I think doing this leads to sounding better when you're transplanted into an environment that's designed for performance...just wait until you can make that "dead practice room sound" ring... Just $0.02...
