The original Dr. Young mouthpiece was made to increase the amount of fundamental and low harmonics in the tuba tone. It did that well and I published a verification of that in an article in the School Musician in about 1958 or 59. It was too large for some popular tubas and I designed a plastic and a brass model more suitable for a 4/4 BBb tuba and also a plastic one for an Eb tuba. Although the plastic ones are no longer available it is still possible to get brass ones. The new brass Dr. Young mouthpieces also enhance the low tones without degrading the high register for those with a good lip.
