Some families of intruments traditionally produce vibrato with fluctuations in different tonal directions.
Think of traditional oboe vibrato verses traditional saxophone vibrato.

'admittedly nothing to do with tuba vibrato, which to me should be done (regardless of the mechanics) rarely below the staff, and virtually never in ensemble playing.
