It's not just airborne contaminants that cause tarnish. Skin oils help to trap those contaminants, and being on the acidic side, the oils themselves contribute greatly to tarnish. Windex or a polish rag will help immensely.
A silver finish has to be really neglected to turn brown. Most of the time, you don't need to use polish to prevent it -- just keep it clean.
