Since you are in the bass role in your band -- go for an arrangement that has a bass solo (that way it wont be missing in the accompanying parts) I’d bet there is a big band arrangement around of So What (miles) or Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (mingus) or the likes. If it is arranged for bass solo, you will have breathing room and wont have to worry about being covered up.

If your band (is small enough and) can play head charts (lead sheets), just pick your favorite tune and play the lead!!!! Make sure the drummer is sensitive to you though...

Keep this in mind -- 2 EASY things that work well for the tuba: Grooves and Lyrical Melodies. Choose a tune with either or both of those and you will be in business.

Also Tom’s idea of a vocal chart would be great. In fact that might be an ideal way to go. You may need a decent keyboard player in the group to make it sound whole, but it would not be hard to make it work well. Don’t be afraid to step out, lead, and make it your own!!

There is a lot more music beyond dixie that works for the tuba (nothing wrong with dixie, just don’t limit yourself to that or any other historical models), use this opportunity to showcase how musical you can be!
