I haven't had the cat-eyes-two-inches-from-mine experience because I can't let my cat sleep with me because of her tendency to start waltzing over my body at 3 a.m.
However, in years past, I had a small, courteous dog, who when she really, really needed to go out earlier than usual in the morning, would rest her muzzle on the edge of the bed, and, ah, "hum." Just hum. Just loud enough to wake you up. THEN you would see dog eyes two inches from your eyes, and they were HUMMING. Woke you up just fine.
