I don't mean to offend anyone, but I just don't believe in the belief that rotary tubas are always different than piston tubas. Sometimes, maybe, but for me, I just concentrate on playing the tuba, not worrying about whether a said mouthpiece is too bright for the tuba, of vice versa. Sorry for rambling, but I had to get that out of my system. So, to answer your question, not always. I play a Miraphone 186 BBb, and completely switched mouthpiece styles about 5 months ago. I went from a PT-44 to an Arnold Jacobs mouthpiece, and when I first played with the AJ, I could tell a difference. I've never noticed whether it was darker or brighter, but was definitely a slightly different sound, i.e the lower end was more rumbly, and felt better for me. So, to answer your question, it really depends on the person.
