Bells and Timbre

Recently, I've seen a guy selling his Getzen/CB-50 with the stock bell replaced with a Vintage York bell.

Does this process alter the timbre/colour of the instrument a great deal or is the primary makeup of the 'sound' determined well before the bell section?

i.e. Is it the bell of an instrument which plays the largest part in determining the overall colour of the instrument?

I think I know leadpipes followed by valveblock design have a primary factor in the response of an instrument. That right too?

Thanks to anyone taking this one on!
