Piston strokes are maybe just a bit easier to control, regarding how fast or slow you push them down...not faster or slower, just maybe easier to "feel". Rather than the general rotor linkage sensation of "on" or "off", with pistons one can more easily sense portions of the valve strokes.
The ability to more easily sense the partial locations of valve stroke lends itself to jazz idioms.
