I think it has a lot to do with one's education. Engineers and scientists are taught to look for reasons that various devices fail and are taught to expect to find relatively simple explanations of troubles.

One time I played the Capuzzi Double Bass Concerto on my tuba with an orchestra in front of about 2000 plus people. I came out on stage and asked for the tuning note and played my tuba with a really stuffy sound. It was obvious that it was the tuba and not me causing the stuffiness. I rotated it around and shook out a teddy bear. That really amused and relaxed the audience. After that I could do no wrong. At the end of the concerto there was a 5 minute standing ovation!
