The Diablo Symphony Orchestra in Walnut Creek, California is holding their annual Young Artist Competition in February 2004r. The competition is limited to Brass Instruments only this year and alternates annually between the various instruments of the orchestra.

1st Prize is $1,000 and performance with the Orchestra

2nd Prize is $500 but no performance

Applicants must have been born after April 25th, 1981 to be eligible and must not be engaged as a full-time professional musician.

Application deadline is January 30, 2004 and the applicant needs to send an audition tape using the music to be performed at the competition, a check made payable to Diablo Symphony Association for $25 registration fee, a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of the tape.. The winner would perform the audition composition with the Symphony on April 30 and May 2, 2004 in Walnut Creek.

The competition is open and contestants are encouraged to invite their relatives and friends to the competition.

The Diablo Symphony Orchestra is currently in its 41st year as a non-professional orchestra. Current and recent performances have included "Carmina Burana", "Petrouchka" and "Mahler Symphony #1".

Over the past 25 years I've listened to the winners while performing in the orchestra and it sure would be nice to have a tubist win this competition.
