Even if the fifth valve is too short, it's easier to extend a slide than it is to modify an instrument for the fifth valve from scratch.

Jay Bertolet had a fifth installed on his 601, and encouraged doing so. He found no downside to doing it, and he had it done with factory parts by a local repair guy. I bet he paid a lot more than $350.
