It sounds like you want to be actively involved in this person's playing because it will help your band. That is admirable, but you have to remember that this person is going to do what they want (or are able to do) in spite of your best efforts to change them.:0)
Lead by example. If you really want to push/pull this Freshman along and they are willing to be pushed/pulled, I would suggest meeting outside band rehearsal and having a 15 or 30 minute "sectional". This is where you play through the parts together, listening carefully and you help them out by writing the correct fingerings in their parts. While writing in fingerings for every note is tedious, it will become less necessary as they constantly see that Bb is open, etc.
The second thing I would suggest is play duets with this person. Duets are great tools for improving playing, no matter where your abilities lie. Heck, you may even have fun playing with this person!
