I don't believe that our resident repair guys have not replied. Is there a NAPBIRT convention going on somewhere? Where are you guys? They will surely correct me if I am wrong - or explain it with more technical ease than I can... but here goes...

With a piston valve, the air gets interrupted more when the valve is pushed down. The valve nearly closes off the air-flow when the valve is halfway down. The holes aren't matching up, and thus it pops sometimes when you slur. The air actually gets kicked back toward the player.

With a rotary valve, when the valve is pushed down, it turns the valve rather than pushes it down. The air is in constant forward motion as it is redirected from one tube to another. It doesn't actually cut off the air and bounce it back like the piston.

We'll see by the follow-ups if I am right, wrong, or somewhere in the middle. I can almost picture Lee Stofer typing away right now!!!
