A metalic clank is probably not due to springs; it is either the valve caps being loose or a lack of felt (or other padding) under the buttons. If you can reproduce the clank by holding the valve halfway down and tapping on the valve cap, they are probably loose. If putting a piece of felt (or other padding, just for this test) under the button stops the clank, then new button felts are called for. If gently twisting a button back and forth makes the valve-guides clank (less likely), then you may want to have those replaced.
I would leave the neoprene under the valve caps alone.
