I agree that Jake was ahead of his time, but I think the recording industry has caught up. I have to wonder if Bell and his generation played a smaller bore instrument just to be picked up by the somewhat primitive recording of the time. I know this doesn't explain why Jake could be heard, other than the fact that it has been said that when he was in his prime he could play LOUD. As recording has gotten better, maybe we are afforded the luxury of playing instruments that go around and not out. Mikes can pick up anything. Just a thought, your results may vary.
