I have to agree with Mitch on this. Continue to pursue your dream as a professional tubist. Train hard, take you vitamins, etc. But don't get tunnel vision. I'm pretty much in the same boat as Mitch. Auditioned for big gigs, (New York Phil), played heavy pieces, Studied with the great one (Jake). But I was realistic at the same time. Can I wait around for 8 to 12 years for a sweet gig? Can I survive on pennies? Having a backup plan is not saying your heart's not totally in it. It's the smart thing to do. I think everyone would agree. I new quite a few cats who were monster players but had degrees in subjects other than music. ie, me (meteorology). Bottom line, you can still play, audition, whatever while working at your mid seven figure job. Hope this helps some. Good luck. Press on bubba!
