I borrowed a Sony DAT walkman & ~$700 Sony mic for a while this summer and loved the setup. Two whole hours per tape, and it's really difficult to accidentally erase something (a friend did that on his MD recorder; good thing I was recording the same thing).
Editing? That can be done later, either into a CD-R or a regular cassette deck.
For rehearsal purposes, I see nothing wrong with either MD or cassette. For making masters of performances, I'm pretty much sold on DAT. Time to save my nickels....
