At least 15 years ago Bob Brookmeyer played a composite instrument:
The bell was the tenor version from Minnick. The body was a standard Conn with custom work(triggers) also by Minnick.
The Canadian big band leader Rob McDowell (?) played also a composite instrument. The bell was a symphony sized one from an 8H or an 88H. The body was the standard Conn.
A local pro big band lead used a Getzen 300 valve body with the bell from his Bach 12.
