Hello Linda, I,too, experienced the same problem when I was in the military. Combined with the weight of the sousaphone and push-ups, I tore up my left shoulder. The only thing that I can tell you is that she should go to a reputable gym and find a a good trainer. Quite possibly the school athletic trainer would work. She needs to start exercises that will strengthen all the muscles around the affected ones. While this will not cure the proble 100%, she will, probably, regain most of the use of her arm and shoulder, albeit, at less strength. I did a lot of lifting focusing on the big neck and shoulder muscles. This helped me, but as SOME musculature is different, she needs to consult a profesional. The obvious other remedy is surgery, but I don't believe in it as I was told I wouls lose alot of my range of motion. Good Luck and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.
