I had the great honor of playing in the dedication ceremony for the Don Ellis Memorial library at Eastfield College in 1981. Great tunes! The quarter tone trumpet is still there at Eastfield, if I'm not mistaken. The quarter tones are produced by using an extra valve that is half as long as the second valve.

If you REALLY want to do this, I think I'd go buy a Yamaha or other tuba with a removable leadpipe, and buy an extra leadpipe for it. Then mount a rotary valve in one of the leadpipes. You could always back out when you tire of the arrangement.

Then, all you gotta do is learn to play 27/16 (TA-ka-TA-ka-TA-ka-ta TA-ka-TA-ka-TA-ka-ta TA-ka-TA-ka-TA-ka-ta TA-ka-ta-TA-ka-ta).
