I don't use a lap pad, but I have a DEG rest that works very well, and I recently got the Meinl Weston tuba strap or harness. This is pretty good too, especially if you stand up to play or just to walk with. (Not going to use the word, "march", but it might be pretty suitable for that as well. The strap puts some strain on the shoulders, but allows the hands to be free to pull music from the folder or turn pages. The rest takes all of the weight, but you have to hold it all of the time. Like both for different reasons.
