Whenever I bought my 983 last year, I actually tried out a couple of the 981's. At the time, I was playing a 822 CC; and they were both far superior(commenting only intonation wise in this discussion). But, I went with the 983 because the 981 was just awkward (the 3+1 setup). I'm not saying the 983 is better or vice versa, I just 'liked it better' but they sounded pretty much the the same. Except PERHAPS the 983 did have a bit more compact sound, but either one is a good choice. I wouldn't trade mine for a hirshy Eb.
