I'm currently Drum Major at my school. It can be hard for a tuba player to get the position for exactly the same reasons Jeff stated, I was very lucky to have had some talented sophmores step-up in the tuba section. I've actually met a couple other tuba drum majors in my area, and George N. Parks (the leading authority on Drum Majoring, he teaches camps all around the nation) is in fact a TUBA PLAYER! :) His band (UMass) is halarious, the band wears regular uniforms but the tubas wear tuxes, sunglasses, and black barets... but I digress :) It is possible for a tuba player to get DM, but it really depends on the situation, definately listen to Jeff's advice.
