What's interesting is how tuba playing (style, sound, technique) has developed in the last 50 years: how many peeps have heard the very first VW recording with the original artists (Philip Catelinet and the LSO under Barbirolli) recorded on 14th June 1954 (the day after the premiere)? I picked up a mint vinyl copy in a charity shop a month or two ago!

John Fletcher had an original-release vinyl EP of this recording but I believe he never heard Catelinet play it live. The player John always mentioned with admiration and affection with regard to the VW was ARTHUR DOYLE who was the tuba player of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in the 50s and 60s. Without doubt Doyle had a big influence on John's own definitive interpretation but I've never been able to track down a recording of a Doyle VW performance.
