I've been a section leader most of my school years, and it was definitely more work than just being a marching member (but still not as hard as being the DM or director!). But, it gave me a chance to work on teaching a lot of techniques to players who weren't going to be music majors, hopefully making my teaching more accessible and productive in the end.

But, during the few times I wasn't a section leader, it was certainly frustrating, knowing that I did out-march and out-play the tubas who were the section leaders (and I could prove it). I would get ragged on just because I was a rookie, not because I had some skill deficiency. At least others in the section knew I was good, so I didn't feel completely alone. It sure didn't make me feel welcome, though, so I didn't go back (a lot of other reasons for that, too).
