It has been remarked that Tony Kniffin "won" the open call round, but that he lacked experience. (ie: At his VERY young age at the time with absolutely NO professional experience. He had spent most of his time with the baritone horn rather than the tuba, and few of his excerpts weren't played 100% in the customary manner, although when a committee member would ask him to adjust he would play exactly as requested.)
