Yes, they make "a lot of extra money playing for movies..." Of course, the reason they get this work is because they choose to accept about a third of what they would earn under an AFM contract. They receive no health and pension contribution, and also no residuals for this work. I'm sure they are happy to have some extra income. It's a shame this income has to come at the expense of the musicians in LA and NY who worked diligently to secure a fair wage for these sessions, and rely on this work for their livelihood.
