As told to me by one who was there: There were eight finalists. Lee Hipp was one of them (he was the one who told me). I think the archives might be able to identify the others.
As stated in various published histories (most recently the notes to the Jacobs CD): There were three audition calls, and the hinted reason there were three is because Maestro wanted a replacement for Jacobs (an impossible task) rather than merely a new tuba player, however skilled.
Nobody I talked with who auditioned felt like they'd been done an injustice when Pokorny got the job. That should go without saying.

For an open audition, this one seems to attract conspiracy theories like the Kennedy assassination.
