I posed a similer question to Charlie Krause who suggested the following. 1) Make sure the instrument is a tight fit in the case - use buble wrap to fill it out. 2) take a slightly deflated basketball and shove it down the bell, then inflate it so that it protrudes from the bell, absorbing any downwards force. 3) take out damage insurance, and 4) say a few words of faith. Mine came through great without any damage, but I sweated the whole trip...
