Yes, many orchestras go on tour, especially when they need it to promote themselves both nationally and internationally. My parents, both symphony musicians, went on four international tours over a 25 year period and it does indeed help create a name for the orchestra. I also have a video tape of the CSO '91 tour of Japan... it seems certain that most other orchestras take tours.
