Franck, like Bruckner, was an organist, and his scoring for orchestra, especially in this piece, seems to emulate the sound of the organ. That would suggest the resonance of a contrabass tuba. For those who play Eb tubas, that would probably be preferable to an F in this case. Check out the recording by Monteux/Chicago on RCA (ca. 1960) with Jacobs on his big York, with a shallow cup mp. It's pretty good.
