I was in Atlanta from 1982 until 1990 and held season tickets. Obviously, Shaw's years in Cleveland working with Szell helped a lot but he still understood his deficiencies and worked around them. However, the package taken as a whole was awsome. I never went away feeling I had hear a dry mechanical performance by people who where anxious to get it over with. We usually rode the subway home with a couple of orchestra members and they seemed to have the same feelings about things that we did. We went through the transition from Shaw to Levy and I would be the first to say Levy was the better "technical" conductor. However, he turned out some spiritless, dry performances.
