That's what I would say, too. No, I didn't play the VW on my senior recital, but I didn't hear any grief about it (although I might now!). I did play a short unaccompanied thing on my 2-valve King contra bugle, and got surprisingly favorable comments on that -- and that's closer to the instrument I'll be getting paid to play, anyway.
I would be offended if I were told that my net worth as a tubist was defined by a certain solo. There's so much more to music than that, and to claim otherwise would be too shallow for me to put up with.
