1. If it's a science fair project you really should learn the difference between "effect" and "affect". If your teachers aren't sure, then look up the words in a dictionary.
2. A few weeks ago Charlie Krause posted something on this BBS about an "amazing discovery". He found that touching the bell of a certain tuba in a certain way at a certain place caused a dramatic improvement in a certain note, if I remember correctly. (Check the archive.) The point that most musicians seem to overlook is this: If playing a note makes the brass vibrate, then it's robbing energy from the air vibrations. Our goal is to make the air vibrate, not the brass. Often you can stop annoying sympathetic metal vibrations in the instrument by touching or holding it the right way, but it's very unlikely to find two instruments that vibrate in exactly the same way--especially after a few dents have been created.
