I'd love to know what enterprising outfit had you playing obscure Harris recently. I've played the 3rd, but my conductor did the 7th with my orchestra a year before I joined. He would like to do more but our band's "mom 'n' pop" hold a tight leash on the tunes. If you think the version you played of When Johnny is weird, you should hear the original, go here

Harris hedged his bets when he shortened it and looped it around for a perfect ABA instead of his original theme and variations. Harris was very uneven, and a crude writer in many respects, but fascinating. His Johnny is like a Robert Hart Benton painting. The Morton Gould American Salute, which you've probably played many times, is like an imitation Norman Rockwell.
